Electrical audits

Power Quality and Harmonic Analysis

Voltage sags and swells, current harmonics and reactive power imbalance, measured where they reach your CNC machines, drives and other sensitive equipment. Carried out by Vinoth Electricals.

About this audit

The Quality of the Power, Not Only the Quantity

Electronic loads such as variable speed drives, CNC controls, rectifiers and UPS units draw current in short pulses instead of a smooth wave. Those pulses carry harmonics. Harmonics, and dips and rises in the supply voltage, can disturb sensitive equipment and shorten the life of motors and electronics. The analysis measures what the supply and the loads are doing, so that the cause of a problem can be found.

The analysis is carried out by Vinoth Electricals, engineers, consultants and contractors for 40 years (EA licence No. 2577). You send the enquiry to Ram Engineering, and we arrange it.

What the Analysis Checks

  • Voltage sags and swells: short dips and rises in the supply voltage
  • Current harmonics: the distorted current drawn by drives, rectifiers and other electronic loads
  • Reactive power imbalance: how much reactive power each phase carries, and how unevenly
  • The effect on your equipment: sensitive CNC machines and heavy drives, where the trouble usually shows first

Why it matters

How Poor Power Quality Shows Up

A voltage sag lasting a fraction of a second can be enough to reset a CNC control or trip a drive, and the stoppage looks like a fault in the machine. A swell can stress insulation and electronic parts.

Harmonic currents heat transformers, cables and motors more than the same current at the supply frequency would. They can overload neutral conductors and capacitor banks, and a capacitor bank fitted for power factor correction can resonate with the supply at a harmonic frequency.

These effects come and go with the load, so they show up only while the plant is working.

What You Get

The findings on voltage sags and swells, harmonics and reactive power at the points measured, and what each one points to, so that you can decide how to protect sensitive electronics and heavy motors.

Questions About Power Quality and Harmonic Analysis

Who carries out the analysis?

Vinoth Electricals, engineers, consultants and contractors for 40 years (EA licence No. 2577). Send your enquiry to Ram Engineering and we arrange it with them.

Our CNC machines trip without a clear reason. Can this help?

It can show whether the supply is involved. A sag or a swell recorded at the moment of a trip points to the supply; a steady supply at that moment points elsewhere, to the machine or its control.

How is this different from the electrical energy audit?

The energy audit looks at how much power the plant takes and where it goes. This analysis looks at the quality of that power: its voltage, its waveform and its balance between the phases. The two can be booked together.

Ask About Power Quality and Harmonic Analysis

Tell us which equipment is affected and what happens to it. Rough answers are fine; we ask for the rest.

One is enough.

For example which machines trip or fail, when it happens, and whether you have drives or capacitor banks. Approximate is fine.
