About this audit
Air That Is Paid for and Never Used
Compressed air is costly to make: a compressor turns electricity into pressure, and much of that electricity ends up as heat. Leaks, pressure drops and compressors that run without delivering air waste what is left.
The audit looks at the network from the compressors to the points of use: where the pressure drops, how the compressors load and unload, and where air leaks out. Ram Engineering carries out the audit and finds the leaks with our own ultrasonic leak detector.
What the Audit Checks
- Pressure drops: across the pneumatic network, from the compressors to the points of use
- Compressor loading: how the compressors load, unload and share the demand
- Air leaks: found with our own ultrasonic leak detector
Why it matters
How Compressed Air Goes to Waste
A leak wastes air whether a machine is using it or not, so leaks keep the compressor working through breaks and idle shifts. In a working shop most leaks cannot be heard; the ultrasound they give off is what an ultrasonic leak detector picks up, even with machines running nearby.
When the pressure falls too far between the compressor and a machine, the usual fix is to raise the compressor’s set pressure, and every leak then loses more air.
A compressor that runs unloaded for long spells still draws power while it delivers no air.
How much air a plant’s leaks waste differs from one plant to the next, so we give no figure before the audit.
What You Get
The leaks found, each with where it is, and the findings on pressure drop and compressor loading across the network.
Questions About the Compressed Air Audit
Why ultrasound?
Air escaping through a small gap makes a high-pitched sound, above the range of the ear. Our ultrasonic leak detector picks it up and leads us to where it comes from, even in a noisy shop.
Will the audit tell us how much the leaks cost?
We do not give a figure in advance. The audit shows where the leaks are, where the pressure drops and how the compressors load; what that costs depends on your own compressors and running hours.
Can it be booked with the electrical energy audit?
Yes. Compressors are often large electrical loads, and the two audits can be booked together.
