What an Electrical Safety Audit Is
An electrical safety audit checks that your installation is in a safe condition and will protect people and plant when something goes wrong: that the earthing is intact, the protection will trip, the switchgear works, the connections run cool and the transformers are sound. It ends with a report of what we found and what each finding needs.
We carry it out together with our partner.
It is a technical audit of the installation. It does not replace an inspection or certificate that the electrical safety rules require of your installation from the authority they name. If you need a particular inspection, report or certificate, tell us, and we confirm with our partner whether it can be covered before we quote.
What the Audit Covers
Your quotation lists the checks that apply to your plant.
| Check | How it is done | What the report shows |
|---|---|---|
| Earth electrodes and earth pits | The resistance of each electrode or pit is measured with an earth tester. | The value for each pit, with any above the limit for your installation listed. |
| Protection relays | Overcurrent and earth fault relays are tested by secondary injection: a test set feeds the relay a known current, and its pick-up and trip are read. This checks the relay and the trip path that is tested. It does not by itself verify the whole primary protection chain, such as the current transformers and all the wiring, which need their own checks. | Each relay’s measured pick-up and operating time against its setting. |
| Breakers and panels | ACB and VCB servicing and testing: trip tests, contact resistance and insulation resistance values. | The values for each breaker, and any that need servicing or replacement. |
| Transformers | Tests at site: insulation resistance, winding resistance, ratio and magnetic balance, with the Buchholz relay and oil thermometer where fitted. | The values for each transformer. |
| Hot spots under load | A thermography survey of panels, switchgear and transformers while they run. | Thermal images graded by priority, with the action each needs. |
Ask First: Not Assumed to Be in the Audit
These are common requests. We confirm with our partner whether each can be covered before we quote.
- A formal inspection, or a certificate under the electrical safety rules.
- Lightning protection checks.
- Power quality measurement.
- An arc flash study or a protection coordination study.
How an Audit Runs
Scope
You tell us the site, the connected load and the equipment to cover, and send your last audit or test report if you have one.
Site Visit
Our team walks the installation with you, sees what runs when and which circuits can be isolated, and agrees what the audit covers.
Plan the Outages
Tests that need a circuit isolated are planned with you, so that production loses as little as possible.
Tests at the Site
We carry out the checks the scope needs: earthing, relays, breakers and panels, transformers. Thermography is done with the equipment running under normal load.
Findings
Each finding is listed with the action it needs. Hot spots are graded by severity.
Report
You receive the test reports for the checks carried out, and the findings.
What Needs a Shutdown
| Check | Does the circuit need to be isolated? |
|---|---|
| Thermography under load | No. The equipment runs at normal load. |
| Relay tests | Yes. Planned with you. |
| Breaker servicing and tests | Yes. Planned with you. |
| Transformer tests | Yes. Planned with you. |
| Earth pit tests | The plan states whether any outage is needed. |
Case study
Electrical Safety Audit of a Large Government Office Building in Tamil Nadu
The situation. A large government office building in Tamil Nadu needed its electrical installations audited for safety, from the 11 kV substation and the transformer yard to the DG yard, the LT room and the building itself, with every finding recorded and ranked so the maintenance teams knew what to fix first.
What we did. On 14 October 2026 the lead auditor, an electrical engineer with over 30 years in the field, walked through eight areas of the site. Each observation was photographed, rated on a four-step severity scale and given the corrective action it needs, and the report grouped the findings by type and by area.
The result. The report lists 32 observations: none critical, 9 high and 23 medium. The largest group was missing identification and signage (13). The others were electrical safety points such as an uncovered distribution board, loose cables and a missing insulating mat (8), access, housekeeping and fire points (9), and earthing and equipment reliability (2).
Where: Tamil Nadu, October 2026.
Records and Handover
- Before the job: the quotation lists the checks, the equipment and the outages needed.
- At handover: the test reports for the checks carried out, and the findings with the action each one needs.
- Hot spots: graded by severity in the thermography report.
- Who signs what: which reports our partner signs, and under what approval, is stated in the quotation.
Electrical Tests on Our Records
We have tested earth electrodes since 2013, protection relays and breakers since 2015, and transformers since 2016, at factories, offices, banks and schools. These tests appear as lines on our invoices, mostly beside transformer maintenance jobs. One invoice of 2023-24 covers 117 earth pits. An invoice of 2017 covers overcurrent, earth fault, over-voltage, auxiliary and differential relays tested by secondary injection, and the Buchholz relay and oil thermometer of a transformer. Invoices of 2022-23 and 2023-24 cover transformer tests of insulation resistance, winding resistance, ratio and magnetic balance. In October 2026 we carried out the visual safety audit told in the case study on this page: a walk-through with 32 recorded observations. The tests above are the checks a fuller audit adds.
Safety on an Electrical Audit
Your permit-to-work governs the job.
- Isolation: your qualified electrical person isolates and locks out each circuit, dealing with backfeeds from other supplies and with stored energy, and the circuit is proved dead before any test set is connected.
- Test sets: relay, breaker and transformer tests use test currents and voltages. Nobody touches the equipment while a test runs, and it is discharged, stored energy included, and earthed again afterwards.
- Tripping: a relay or breaker test can drop a load, so the sequence is agreed with your operator first.
- Earth tests: no earth testing in a thunderstorm, and nobody touches an electrode while it is under test.
- Live equipment: thermography is done on energised panels. Opening them needs a competent person’s authorisation and a shock and arc-flash risk assessment, which set who opens each cover, the distances and the protective clothing. Where a panel has a suitable infrared inspection window, it is used and the cover stays shut.
- Before re-energising: covers are refitted, temporary earths and test connections removed, and the circuit is handed back by your responsible person, as your procedure sets.
Where It Is Used
- Automotive component plants and foundries.
- Pharmaceutical plants.
- Leather and footwear plants.
- Banks, offices and commercial buildings.
- Schools.
What Your Site Provides
Our past offers put these in the customer’s scope; your offer confirms them.
- Permits, gate passes and entry to the substation, panel rooms and earth pits.
- A qualified electrical person to isolate, lock out and prove dead each circuit, and to re-energise it.
- Shutdown windows for the tests that need a circuit isolated.
- The single-line diagram, the panel and transformer list, relay settings and earlier test reports, if you have them.
- Earth pit covers opened, or access to the pits.
- The equipment running at normal load on the day of the thermography.
Questions Buyers Ask
Does the audit need a shutdown?
Thermography does not: the equipment runs at normal load. Relay, breaker and transformer tests need the circuit isolated, and we plan them with you. For earth pit tests, the plan states whether an outage is needed.
Can the audit include a particular inspection, report or certificate?
Tell us which inspection, report or certificate you need. We confirm with our partner whether it can be covered before we quote.
Is this the inspection that the electrical safety rules require?
Not unless the quotation says so. This is a technical audit of the installation. Tell us which inspection or certificate your installation needs, and we confirm what our partner can cover.
How often should earthing and protection be tested?
Earth pits are commonly tested every year, and relays and breakers on the schedule in your maintenance plan or the maker’s advice. The rules that apply to your installation, or your insurer, may set their own intervals.
How is the job charged?
As the quotation states. Our invoices have charged tests per item (per earth pit, per relay, per breaker), per transformer or per job. For jobs outside Chennai, travel and stay for our team are included in the quote.
What should I send to start?
The site, the connected load, the number of panels, transformers, relays and earth pits, and your last audit or test report. Send photos on WhatsApp to +91 99400 49505 or by email to [email protected].
